RESEARCH DATA:

The pinilian textiles of the Tinguian people in Abra are renowned for their intricacy, vibrant colors, and unique motifs and designs. The term "pinilian" comes from "pili," meaning "choose" or "select," and refers to the special technique used in the weaving process. Textiles woven using this technique feature motifs and patterns that are embossed or raised in relief on the cloth’s surface (Pastor-Roces, 1991). Typically woven to serve as panels for traditional blankets, Tinguian weavers also produce innovative textiles using the pinilian technique, such as scarves, shawls, wall decor, and clothing accents, among other items. This textile from the collection is a sample pinilian yardage with continuous diamond and zigzag motifs arranged in vertical rows. It exemplifies textiles designed by Patis Tesoro that are inspired by Cordillera textile traditions, which include the application of traditional techniques, incorporation of local motifs, and creation of innovative patterns and designs.
