RESEARCH DATA:

This textile from the collection features a plain-woven abaca base cloth in reddish or magenta tones. Along the central seam is a narrow strip of tapestry-woven geometric patterns in silk, likely bought from or acquired through trade with weaving communities in western Mindanao or the Sulu Archipelago.
The beadwork is highly characteristic of Bagobo ornamentation, using glass beads in white, yellow, blue, and pink. Along both lower edges and horizontal seams of the garment runs a single appliquéd band with embroidery, lined with beadwork. According to Pastor-Roces (1991), this decorative band is referred to as tutuk, while the overlaid or outlining beadwork is known as pang-o-lo-bayan (p. 99). The tutuk most often features zigzag motifs (tekko) and red cotton appliqué (tugur) (Pastor-Roces, 1991).
