RESEARCH DATA:

This textile from the collection is an embroidered textile from the Sulu Archipelago, crafted and used by the Tausug. In Araneta and Lim's (2014) Art and the Order of Nature, the textile is identified as a tadjung, likely because of the checkered designs found on its outer sections. However, it also features embroidery motifs characteristic of the Tausug habul tiyahian, suggesting that it may represent a hybrid form.

The textile is a tubular garment featuring a grid-patterned or plaid/check design, highlighted by light-colored lines set against a dark background. The motifs within each square of the grid depict colorful flowers and butterflies rendered in vibrant shades of orange, magenta, and blue.
