RESEARCH DATA:

This handwoven wrap-around skirt, or kain, is from Kalinga. The two panels are stitched together in the middle, with some parts noticeably damaged or unraveled. It features seven thick red stripes with a distinctive continuous oval-shaped pattern, locally identified as "mountains." Alternating with these red bands are thin red and white stripes on an indigo background. At the warp edges, checkered patterns in red, yellow, and indigo, woven in supplementary weft, run perpendicular to the overall stripe designs. It should be noted that red is one of the most prominent colors in Kalinga textiles, symbolizing blood and reflecting their strong sense of filial piety (Ngao-i, 2022). Patterns and designs often reflect their values, worldviews, or beliefs, along with the natural landscape of their community.
