RESEARCH DATA:

A kain or handwoven wrap-around skirt from Dacalan, Tanudan, Kalinga. The two panels are embroidered together in the middle using red and yellow threads. It features five bands of red stripes with embedded geometric designs arranged linearly, alternating with royal blue stripes made up of four parallel lines. Along the warp edges are three narrow bands of brocade-woven orange and yellow checkered patterns. These checkered patterns vary in thickness, shape, and color across Kalinga textiles, but remain distinctive to Kalinga’s woven garments and some of their blankets. The Kalinga people, often referred to as the “Peacocks of the North” (San Agustin, 2007), are known for their vibrant color palettes, as well as the intricate patterns and embroideries in their textiles.
