RESEARCH DATA:

Many variations of loincloths are used by the Itneg and Tinguian men of Abra, ranging from white-colored ones to naturally dyed loincloths, all of which may feature intricate weaving patterns and motifs. This textile from the collection is an example of the dina-ogan loincloth. The dina-ogan highlights indigo-colored threads, specifically navy blue, woven throughout most of the textile.

This specific dina-ogan is woven using a mix of plain weaving and supplementary weft techniques. The indigo portion of the loincloth is plain-woven, while the two stripes with red diamond patterns are created by supplementing thicker weft threads during the weaving process. Additionally, three net-like embellishments are embroidered near the hemmed warp ends of the loincloth. Red embroidery in the shape of triangles is also added to the hemline. Lastly, brown twisted fringes with red and yellow tassels are stitched onto the hemline of the textile.
