RESEARCH DATA:
This textile is a variation of the Kalinga red and yellow loincloth (baag) known as the sinurdado or sinurchaho. It is traditionally worn during peace pacts such as the sipat and bodong, as well as in important ceremonies like weddings and baptisms (Respicio, 2000). It features three coral-colored bands running along the length of the cloth, with warp-wise threads flowing from the lower part, creating a fringe-like appearance. As with most Cordillera loincloths, the designs are concentrated near the bottom edges. These include continuous rows of zigzag patterns in alternating colors and mortar-like (lusong) motifs woven using the brocade technique. The rice mortar-like motif, or lusong, is a significant symbol in Kalinga textiles, reflecting their rich farming traditions and vibrant rice culture.
