RESEARCH DATA:
Cordilleran basket weaving culture also included weaving hats which were used as a protection from the sun. As mentioned by Lane (1986) hat baskets are made of very fine, soft bamboo split over a coarser bamboo frame. Furthermore, a fine indigenous design is achieved by alteration in weaving from one-over-one to extended in a twill pattern. There are many designs of basket hats in the Cordillera; these include a cowboy hat inspired design, a postman hat design, and a plain round hat. Some are also decorated with feathers, anthropomorphic figures, cowrie shells and beads. The adornment of the hats depends on its provenance for the ethnolinguistic groups in the Cordillera have their own distinctive designs.
