RESEARCH DATA:

A bead necklace restrung by Patis Tesoro, featuring Itneg heirloom beads. Very fine black beads are strung into two strands and arranged in elegantly draped rows. Interspersed among them are large teardrop-shaped yellow beads, translucent Baltic amber beads, and intricately crafted brass filigree beads called samfufok (Jimenez & Sabado, 2017).

The samfufok among the Itneg or Tinguian are crafted from melted coins and metals such as silver, brass, or gold and are shaped into intricate designs that reflect Christian imagery and motifs. They are remnants of a past influenced by Spanish colonialism and Catholicism, as well as reflections of the vibrant trade networks that once linked Ilocos and the Cordillera, particularly Abra.
