RESEARCH DATA:

The Isnag people of Apayao province are among the few ethnic groups in the Cordillera who do not traditionally practice textile weaving, as they acquire textiles through trade. However, they are renowned for their craftsmanship in personalizing these textiles, focusing on embellishments such as beadwork, embroidery, tasselwork, and more. This specific item from the collection, an Isnag man’s back skirt known as the iput (Pastor-Roces, 1985), exemplifies this craftsmanship. The iput is typically adorned with intricate embroidery and tassel work, often enhanced with beads and buttons. This particular iput features eight sets of twisted tassels in varying colors, without any beadwork or buttons. Each set is separated by an embroidered strip of fabric attached to the waistband. The embroidered strips are finished with combinations of black, red, and white twisted tassels at their ends.
