RESEARCH DATA:
This hip bag from the collection is called an amba’yong or ambáyung. It has several objects attached to its fringes, including trapezoid-shaped brass pendants, ling-ling-o, beads, and a talisman made of wood coiled in woven rattan. It features five (5) hinulgi stripes composed of diamond patterns in alternating orange and yellow. According to Lambrecht (1958), these hinulgi were woven “in the same manner” as those found in gamong blankets (p. 32). Compared to pinuh’ha hip bags, the amba’yong is smaller in size, although both serve the same function of carrying personal effects.
