RESEARCH DATA:

Penannular rings made of brass were utilized by the Ga’dang and other communities in the Mountain Province both as a medium of currency and as decorative elements affixed to headdresses and other personal effects. These rings are reminiscent of the panika—gold barter rings used as currency in the Philippines between the 10th and 13th centuries. However, panikas were typically hollow at the center (Capistrano-Baker 2011), while these brass barter rings from the collection are solid in form.
