RESEARCH DATA:

Traditionally, the pinagpakhan blanket was used as a funerary garment. The pinagpakhan is a required blanket for the deceased whose ancestors used this type of blanket at their funeral; this practice has been passed down through generations (Celino, 1990). Tradition mandates that an offspring use the same type of blanket as that of their parent, and they would not be entitled to a higher category of blanket than their parents. Thus, the number of symbols on the blanket demonstrates the affluence and status of the deceased kachangyan (rich), such as the recurring eyelets or diamond-shaped designs associated with ancestry and nobility.
