RESEARCH DATA:

This woven hat is called saklong/suklong found in the Mountain Province and in northern Kalinga, Luzon, Philippines. This particular saklong is worn at the back of the head, and characterized by having a strand of beaded tassels called bawisak; and two butterfly-shaped shell pieces called painga (Maramba, 1998). Unlike its bigger Bontoc and Kalinga counterparts, the Ga’dang saklong is not used as a convenient storage for betel nuts or any small items. Instead, this hat is used for aesthetic purposes only (Maramba, 1998; Anderson, 2010) and to denote the high status of the wearer.
